Electronically controlled in-tank fuel pumps are for delivery from the tank, whereas the under bonnet high pressure fuel pumps for injection and are far more complicated than the older mechanical fuel pumps which used to vacuum the fuel from the tank to the engine. In some applications it is possible to purchase the fuel pump unit separately and with others it is only available complete with the housing assembly.
